Some of you might remember this YJ as an old favorite posting topic of mine. I have so many great memories in this Jeep. I learned to drive stick in it. I used to steal it from my mom all summer and drive it until I was too sunburnt to continue. It’s been sitting for close to two years now, as it’ll never pass inspection due to rust. It’s now resting at a family friend’s property, quietly returning to the earth.

Frame rust?

Nothing that an angle grinder and booger welds can’t fix

My dad has an ‘83 CJ-7 he bought new and it’s sitting in his backyard crumbling back into the earth. I only got to drive it once and it felt like driving a school bus, what with the super thin steering wheel and tractor-like gearbox. But I have lots of memories of that Jeep from when I was a kid. I feel bad that it’s just decaying.

I’d say dump it on Tracy but that’s no longer an option for the next
month or so
. :o

Nah, the frame's good. The rest of it is junk tho.

Noooo ooooooo oo.... ... Poor YJ. :(

Sorry to hear about your YJ—at least you know where it is and could conceivably try to repair or store it. As it so happens, this afternoon I went down the rabbit hole of trying to locate my TJ (my first real car). Ran a CARFAX and found she had four owners after me, and was up to nearly 200,000 miles before some dingus crashed it four months after his purchase a few years back , and then again once and for all this February . She survived nearly 20 years, including all of the stupid things 17-22 year old me put her through, only to end up rusted and wrecked. Somebody apparently bought her at auction as she stood; I tell myself she’s now being lovingly repaired on a farm somewhere, and she’ll be driven by a kindly old man down his dirt road driveway each morning to get the mail. Never really thought too much about my past cars, but some of them really do stay with you. Not ashamed to admit seeing the picture below hurt and I feel for you.

Body swap ! What’s got a similar wheelbase? I’m sure there are fanatically researched lists out there.

You say that, but Michigan doesn’t have inspections! If the rust is the only issue, Tracy could get it registered and plated with very little effort.

Jalopnik put him in “ Time Out"?

Neighbor complained to town, town gave him a month to either have each vehicle working and registered or dispose of them.

Oh, similar to this guy:

I guess he finally pissed one neighbor off or a newer one has a stick up their ass, because this has been going on for a long time for him to just now get an ultimatum.

It’s REAL easy to swap body panels on these. What’s rusting? Plenty of bolt on that can hide it and will pass MA inspection

Yeah, but if he can plate it he’s good. It’s only inoperable/unregistered vehicles he has to deal with. Granted not a great time for a 14 hour road trip to drive it back (especially since he probably couldn’t cut through Canada to make it shorter), but it wouldn’t be another thing he’d need to fix.

Say , did you ever tag any of those YJ posts? I’m afraid I missed out on them, never having been much of a Jeep guy until recently.

I was a bit inconsistent with tagging but here’s one of them:

Saddness. S hame that MA is so far from South Dakota, I’ve been yearning for a YJ, and no inspections here. I’d be happy to shoddily repair the worst of it and drive it for years to come.

You wouldn't want it anyways, it's the 4.2

¯\_()_/¯ I’m not really picky, and this point any running and driving manual YJ fits the bill, I’d even take a 4 cyl.

2013! So that’s why I missed it; I hadn’t even joined Oppo yet .
